Freida Pinto does the Angelina Jolie

Actress Freida Pinto was the centre of attraction as she dazzled on the red carpet at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival on Wednesday night. The actor, who made her second appearance there, was the first Indian celebrity to walk the red carpet at the prestigious film festival this year. Freida looked stunning as she wore a gown designed by Michael Angel, with a strapless beaded bodice, a pale pink satin skirt with a peplum effect at filmmaker Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom premiere. Giving her company was Desperate Houswives star, Eva Longoria. They both were present at the opening ceremony to represent the cosmetic brand they endorse.

Her red carpet look this time was quite different from all her previous outings, as she seems to channel Hollywood actor, Angelina Jolie’s famous thigh-high slit, leg-out appearance at this year’s Oscars. Freida’s look evoked a good response from the swish set at Cannes — where she posed for the shutterbugs, flaunting her right leg in a thigh high slit a la Angie.

A source close to her reveals, “Freida was at the red carpet on the opening ceremony and most of the shutterbugs could recognise her. Slumdog Millionaire has made her the most recognisable Indian face across the globe, after Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan. She’s quite a regular at international film festival circuit.”

After her red carpet outing, Freida then changed into a black sequin Versace gown with a sheer neckline mesh and sequin embellished black floor length gown paired with black pumps, for the ‘Opening Night Dinner’ held at Palais des Festivals in France. Her second look for the dinner was more dramatic with kohl-rimmed, smokey eyes and shocking pink-fuchsia lip colour as compared to her soft nude lips for the day.

Freida Pinto's Trishna gets an item number

Posted in : Gossips, Movies

(added 2 days ago)

Freida Pinto's Trishna gets an item numberFirst, we had British litterateur Thomas Hardy's 19th century masterpiece Tess being trans-located to Rajasthan [ Images ] in Michael Winterbottom's movie adaptation Trishna.

Now, we have news of the adaptation being forcibly moved even further away from its source material in the Hindi dubbed version of Trishna, which releases in India in July. A reliable source informs that the Indian distributors of Trishna intend to add an item song to the British director's screen version of the Tess saga.

"The film's Indian distributors think Trishna is too artistic," says the source. "But it has the makings of a great masala film as well. Freida Pinto [ Images ] plays a kind of Mother India, who's tossed from one cruel circumstance to another. Women audiences in India would weep buckets over her. The male audience is also in for a treat. Freida has done a very graphic and lingering lovemaking scene in the film. So we see a lot of potential for Trishna in the Indian market."

Huma Qureshi, the leading lady of Anurag Kashyap's much-talked about Gangs Of Wasseypur, will perform the item number. Interestingly, Kashyap has cameo appearance in Trishna. Apparently, the situation for the item song is interwoven into the plot.

Says the source, "Freida plays a wannabe actress. In a sequence, she visits a studio to meet director Anurag Kashyap and his wife Kalki. That's where the item song will come in."When contacted, Trishna's Indian producer Sunil Bohra did not try to deny the artistic liberties planned to be taken with Thomas Hardy and Michael Winterbottom.

Says Bohra, "Yes, we're going to have an item song in the Hindi version of Trishna. There's an ideal situation for it in the film when the heroine goes to meet a director. The song Maintenance meri maintenance is filmed on Huma Quereshi. Ganesh Acharya has choreographed it."

When asked what the Trishna director would think of the tantalizing embellishment to his artistry, Bohra was nonchalant. "It's not as if the situation for the item song is not there in the film. In fact, we're also going to change the posters of Trishna for the Indian release. The international posters are too abstract. We're planning something more desi and eye-catching."

Bohra also expressed his apprehensions about the lovemaking scenes. "Freida's lovemaking scenes in Trishna will set the screen on fire. But I am worried about our Censor Board."

Freida Pinto:-Hope In Sierra Leone

Posted in : Gossips

(added 4 days ago)

Freida Pinto:-Hope In Sierra LeoneLet me start off by apologising for not being able to connect with you for the last two weeks. I was amidst educating and preparing myself for my new role as the goodwill ambassador for my charity — Plan International’s initiative, Because I am a Girl (BIAAG). It was a life changing experience  and I felt compelled to share it with you. The initiative has been set up in eight countries at the moment, and will continue to expand. India and Nepal are on the agenda too. My first visit was to Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Sierra Leone, like India, was once colonised by the British but the history of pain and hardships didn’t end there. It was magnified by the 10 year civil war or the “diamond curse” that it faced from 1991 to 2002. Post the war, the country witnessed escalated levels of unemployment, breakdown of education and economic systems, mass rape, ruthless killings, amputations of men, women and children but above all, it was the destruction of people’s morale!

So what does one do when things look grim? You can let yourself be victimised or stand up and take matters into your own hands. What does BIAAG have to do with it and why girls, you may ask? Let’s face it — Girls are the most marginalised and affected in developing countries. They give into early marriage and are denied education because for some reason their worth in society has always been undermined.

In Sierra Leone, the treacherous web of problems women face is endless — teenage pregnancies, forced or self imposed prostitution to make ends meet, death during pregnancy, denial of education and the shocking female genital mutilation that is unfortunately embedded in their tradition like Sati was once in ours.

There is no overnight solution to these problems, but here’s what I think — educate and empower a girl and she will help build a stronger community.

Ask them what their dreams are and they will, in their extremely polished, polite and upper crust English, tell you that they want to be — accountants, doctors, journalists, politicians — but only after they say that they dream of a place that is rid of gender inequality. Hence they treat education like a luxury and I was amazed by their command over the English language and oratory skills.

Then what about boys? The boys are very important, for their support and encouragement makes the girls feel safer and less intimidated. Most of the girl empowerment groups formed by Plan have at least 15 to 25% boys, who make a stand against gender discrimination, encourage parents to send their daughters to school and try their level best to be the voice for the voiceless.

There’s so much more I want to share but word count has gone into the red. If you want to learn more, you can check the Plan International website.

I was asked by a journalist in Sierra Leone, what hope can I give these girls to which I said: “To be very honest these girls have given me hope.”We have always thought of places like Africa to be a black hole with no salvation in sight. But the optimism of these girls has given me a renewed sense of hope despite the troubled times we live in.

Freida Pinto’s heading to Cannes

Posted in : Gossips

(added 9 days ago)

Actor Freida Pinto (of Slumdog Millionaire fame) is a regular at international film festivals ever since her debut film created history atthe Academy Awards. The actor, who made her debut at Cannes last year, will be heading there this year too.

Freida Pinto’s heading to Cannes

While there have been speculations about Freida attending the festival, her spokesperson sets the record straight. “Freida Pinto will be attending and walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival to be held from 16 to 27 May this year. This will be her second time at Cannes. She will be there supporting the brand she endorses. She is looking forward to the festival this year and hopes to have a good time.”

While the dayon which Freida makes her appearance is yet to be decided, sources close to her insist that she will be walking the red carpet on May 17. The actor, who is currently in Los Angeles, will fly to Cannes directly from there.

However, contrary to reports that suggest that boyfriend, actor Dev Patel will accompany her to the film festival, sources say that she will be making a solo appearance. “Freida would have loved to have Dev accompany her, but unfortunately that is not possible. Dev is busy with his commitments, and can’t adjust his dates for Cannes. And since Freida is the face of the brand, she will walk the red carpet alone.”

Freida has been busy shooting round the clock, and also reading a couple of scripts. Her trip to Cannes would be brief this year as she’ll be flying back to LAonce she makes a red carpet appearance for the brand. “Freida has had a really busy schedule, so she hasn’t had the time to take a vacation. Though she would love to come to India, she will mostly not to be able to make it. What she will wear to the red carpet is also being worked out now,” the source reveals.

Fame was "almost too much", says Freida Pinto

Posted in : Gossips

(added 10 days ago)

Freida Pinto says fame was "almost too much" for her. The 27-year-old actress admits she nearly couldn't come to terms with being a celebrity after starring in 2008 movie Slumdog Millionaire, and the actress felt her co-star and boyfriend Dev Patel was the only person who "truly understood" what she was going through.

Fame was almost too much, says Freida Pinto

She explained: "If I needed to talk to someone about what happened, he was the only one who knew what was going on. It was nice to have those moments and that experience together. It took a while to accept what had happened. As much as I was happy with what was going on, it was almost too much to take in for somebody who'd never experienced any of that before. Surrounding myself with good people such as family and close friends helped me keep my head on my shoulders. That said, the one thing I knew was I had to seize the moment and strike while the iron was hot."

Despite the couple's busy schedules, Freida admits the pair "always try to make time for each other" to ensure their relationship remains intact.

In an interview with Daily Telegraph Australia's Sunday magazine, she added: "You have to want to keep the relationship going. He's filming in LA right now, so this arrangement completely works. I don't know where I'm going for my next film or where he's going for his next project, but we always try to make time for each other. It's difficult with such tight schedules, but the fact you want to make the time is more important."

I had to seize the moment and strike while iron was hot, says Freida Pinto

I had to seize the moment and strike while iron was hot, says Freida PintoMelbourne: Freida Pinto, who is determined to show the world she’s no one-hit wonder, has admitted that instant stardom has taken some getting used to. The 27-year-old Indian-born beauty was trying to make ends meet, working as a model in her native Mumbai, when British director Danny Boyle plucked her from relative obscurity to star in his 2008 film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

The fact she beat off hundreds of other actors in an extensive six-month global audition process would be amazing enough. But the fairytale didn’t end there. That little film of Boyle’s struck a chord with audiences worldwide and went all the way to the Oscars where, in 2009, it scooped eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Suddenly, Pinto was a Hollywood star.

“It took a while to accept what had happened,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying. “As much as I was happy with what was going on, it was almost too much to take in for somebody who’d never experienced any of that before. “Surrounding myself with good people such as family and close friends helped me keep my head on my shoulders. “That said, the one thing I knew was I had to seize the moment and strike while the iron was hot,” she added. Fame wasn’t the only thing Pinto gained from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, she also bagged herself a boyfriend, falling in love with her London-born co-star Dev Patel, now 22.

Seems like money does matter at the end of the day as it turns out Freida Pinto recently declined a script from a Bollywood production house because she wasn’t satisfied with the amount she was offered and wanted double.

After no answer was given from the actress, the producers found out the problem. When she was asked if she had read the script she distanced the subject and went back to the amount presented, discloses a source. Apparently the production were not going to give her the amount she wanted and now, seem like seeing her around B-town will be very low.
